The Weight of Words

Prompt: “You look sad.”


“You look terrible,” he said, and his words dripped with resentment. 

“Thanks,” she said, and the word meant nothing.

“You look tired,” he said, and it pained him to do so.

“I’m fine,” she said, but she was lying.

“You look scared,” he said, and his face softened with compassion. 

“I am,” she said, and her walls slowly crumbled.

“You look sad,” he said, and his words carried the weight of his guilt. 

“I’m fine,” she said, and this time, she smiled, because it was true. 

“You look so beautiful,” he said, and his walls broke completely.

“Thanks,” she said, and the word meant everything. “So do you.”
